Viking mixers, the 7 quart stand mixer, are our top choice. The quality is excellent, as Viking is known for their heavier restaurant commercial quality appliances. We selected this mixer as our top choice because after using several different brands over the years we finally came to our senses a few years ago and purchased a professional grade mixer and have at last upgraded to the top of the line, on that can do it all --- from kneading the stiffest dough to creating the most delicate of meringues.
The Viking 7 quart stand mixer is available in three colors: gray, red, and black combined with stainless steel. The black and stainless sold me before I even tried the mixer. I have seen each of the colors personally and it is just a matter of preference as far as that goes.
What is impressive about the 7 quart mixer is that it 
is heavy enough to handle a hard day of work, with 1000 watts of power. This is a heavy appliance, but with easy glide wheels on the back underside of the mixer, moving it is a breeze. Just slide it forward when you are ready to use it and push it back into its place when done. Additionally there are plenty of attachments available.
Not to mislead anyone, this mixer is not cheap. However, we strongly recommend the 7 quart size for those who enjoy time in the kitchen and will put the mixer to good use. There is a Viking 5 quart stand mixer, available in the same colors, that is priced accordingly and will probably suffice for most families.

Just as an aside, it is our opinion that many people do not cook because they have less than adequate small kitchen appliances. We have all been there. We have all experienced the attachment coming undone while in use. We have all had a motor just die on us or cringed when we heard the strain as we tried to mix dough. That is enough to make any potential cook decide to head to a restaurant. We understand that.
But, what we do know --- again, from our personal experiences --- is that when you have quality kitchen equipment you will spend more time enjoying cooking for the family. The emphasis should be on the enjoyment.
Many of our recommendations are rather expensive compared to what most of us find in the department stores. That much we will acknowledge. However, why buy one mixer after another after another when one quality purchase will last for years?
